Yellow Hibiscus: Did You Know?

Hawaii claimed the yellow hibiscus as its state flower in 1988. Yellow hibiscus is only found on the main islands in Hawaii, but is extremely rare, and actually considered an endangered species. The hibiscus bears blooms every day, but the blooms only last for a day even when on the bush. Hawaiian hibiscus shrub grows to a height of 3 to 15 feet tall with a diameter of 8 to 15 feet. Young Hawaiian hibiscus plants have smooth tan trunks; the trunks of older plants have a wrinkled appearance. The leaves on Hawaiian hibiscus have toothed edges, 3, 5, or 7 lobes, and are up to 6 inches long and equally wide. The seeds of Hawaiian hibiscus are contained in 3/8 to 3/4 inch oval capsules. The capsule is covered with soft hairs. It is dry and tan when mature and opens to release the seeds. The seeds are 1/8 inch long, kidney-shaped, and covered with fine hairs.

Hawaiian hibiscus flower plants can be grown from cuttings if rooting hormones are used. Hawaiian hibiscus bloom from spring through early summer with occasional flowers during the rest of the year. The hibiscus comes in a variety of colors and make a striking statement anywhere they are planted.

While writing Three Propositions, my hero is originally from Hawaii and owns a home there (he's a billionaire..lol), so part of the book is located in Hawaii. As I researched information on trees, shrubs, and flowers, native to Hawaii, I found the hibiscus. I have to say the blooms are magnificent. I live in Ohio, and I do see the plants in the stores during summer, but never bought one because of our colder climate. Although I love to garden, I'm pretty sure that plant would need to be brought inside in the fall/winter months, and need a more humid environment.

If you know me, you know I do not have a green thumb! lol

The temperature is mild in the Hawaiian islands. Hawaii is the 43rd largest state in the US. The geographic center of Hawaii is located off the southwestern shore of Molokai west of Lanai. Hawaii is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, about 2,400 miles southwest of the Continental United States.Hawaii is composed of 8 small islands, which include Hawaii, Kahoolawe, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Owing to Hawaii's popularity in growing beautiful orchids, the island has the nickname The Orchid Isle. Cane sugar, pineapple, flowers and nursery products are the chief products Of Hawaii. Hawaii is the largest of the habitable Hawaiian islands and covers 4,038 square miles. Hawaii was formed by 5 volcanoes, two of which are still active, Kohala and Hualalai. The most notable landmark in Hawaii is the 760-foot extinct volcanic crater, known as Diamond Head, located on the southeastern end of the island at the end of Waikiki. The tourist industry is Hawaii's largest source of income.

One of my dream vacations is Maui, Hawaii, and eventually I will get there. I may be an old woman by that time, but it will happen. Have you ever been? Any tips before I venture west? Feel free to drop a comment below.
